Who is a Good Candidate for Dentures?

Most patients who are without multiple teeth or an entire arch can benefit from dentures. Although the type that is recommended (i.e., partial, full, or implant) will depend on how many teeth you are missing, we can determine through a comprehensive examination what your needs are so that we choose the right kind of prosthetic for your smile.

We will also make sure that your jawbone is dense enough to adequately support your dentures as well as if you require any additional forms of treatment (i.e., gum disease therapy, tooth extraction, etc.).

Types of Dentures

Partial, full, and implant dentures are the three different types you can expect our team to discuss with you during your initial consultation. It’s during this visit that we will go over the differences and decide which one will be right for you.

Partial Dentures

Using an acrylic base that matches the natural color of your gums, we will incorporate a metal framework that uses clips or clasps to help hold your partial in place. The teeth that are attached to the base will match up with the vacant areas along your arch so that when the prosthetic is fitted, it will act similarly to a puzzle piece.

Full Dentures

Using the same materials as partials, full dentures are crafted the same way but without a metal framework. Instead of attaching to natural teeth to hold them in place, full dentures rely on natural suction, as there are no remaining teeth to anchor to. Of course, many patients feel more comfortable using denture adhesive as another form of security since it helps keep teeth more firmly in place while eating and speaking.

Implant Dentures

Requiring no adhesives, natural suction, or natural teeth are implant dentures. These prosthetics can replace an entire row of missing teeth using four to six titanium posts. These are surgically placed within the jawbone and support a custom-made denture once it is ready for placement. Implant dentures can last 30 years or more, which is decades longer than traditional dentures, and they deliver optimal durability and stability while also improving your bite force.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures of any kind are capable of delivering exceptional benefits to patients living with missing teeth. Once put in place, they:

  • Offer increased confidence and a more vibrant and beautiful smile
  • Make it possible to maintain a healthier diet that is full of nutrient-rich foods
  • Are easy to clean and allow for better oral and overall health
  • Can last 5-7 years (partials and full dentures) or 30+ years (implant dentures)

Dentures FAQs

Do Dentures Break Easily?

Dentures are very durable, but they don’t last forever. They can last between five and seven years if you care for them properly. However, accidents can happen and break dentures prematurely. The most common reason for broken dentures is dropping them while cleaning, inserting, or removing them. Dentures can also break or fracture if they fit poorly or have tiny defects in their base, like scratches and notches.

Can Dentures Become Ill-Fitting?

Dentures are customized for their patients’ mouths, so they should fit very well at first. However, dentures can become ill-fitting over time. This is because dentures don’t prevent atrophy of the jaw, so the mouth continues to chair over time. Ill-fitting dentures can result in oral health issues, like sore and swollen gums. Other side effects include bad breath, trouble speaking, and bleeding gum tissue. If your dentures become ill-fitting, let us know. We can have them relined or readjusted to fit your current mouth. Alternatively, we can provide you with new dentures to better fit your smile.

Can I Sleep with My Dentures?

Dentists usually recommend taking your dentures out when you go to sleep. This is because dentures can restrict the circulation in your gums, leading to soft tissue irritation and potentially speeding up ridge resorption. Taking dentures out gives the gums a chance to recover and get the nutrients they need during the night. The dark, moist space beneath the gum tissue is also an ideal place for bacteria to thrive. Because of this, sleeping with dentures has been found to be associated with a higher risk of pneumonia.

Is It Hard to Talk with Dentures?

When you first get dentures, it takes time to get used to speaking with them because you’re so used to speaking with your natural teeth. The amount of time it takes to get used to speaking with your dentures can vary, but generally speaking, the more you practice, the faster this process will go. You may have a slight lisp at first due to changes in your palate. Once you learn to correct these changes, the lisp will disappear. Fast speech can also come out muffled as you adjust. Over time, you will find that speaking with your dentures becomes easier.
